The very first kit of the growing range of airliners from Airbus Industries, the A380-800, is now with us. This kit is big! The white plastic parts are contained within four large frames and all have very nice detailing. The undercarriage assemblies in particular are very well depicted. The largest parts, such as the wings and fuselage halves, have recessed lines that may at first seem slightly over scale but when painted it is not too obvious.

Some points that stand out and are worth mentioning are the beautiful curves of the aerofoil sections to all the flying surfaces, the flight deck that has just enough for this scale and the size of the fuselage.

Hyman Rickover, father of the nuclear submarine, saying that a hobby company's model had given away classified information to the Soviet Union. "If I were a Russian," declared Rickover, "I would be most grateful to the United States for it generosity in supplying such information for $2.98."

In the late 1930s, Germany's Lufthansa asked Blohm & Voss to design a large flying boat able to cross the North Atlantic.

The military applications of this aircraft were obvious, and soon the Bv 222 Wiking was developed. Only 13 Bv 222s were built, and most were destroyed during the war. However, two survived to be tested in England and the United States.

The biggest - and ultimately fatal - problems were the Allison T-40 turboprops.

Though the few R3Y-1 and -2 variants that were produced reached operational status with Navy squadron VR-2, the continuous engine problems prematurely grounded and scrapped the Tradewind fleet.

Britain's prime minister, Winston Churchill, confessed it was his deepest worry.

"Wolf packs" of U-boats were the main threat to the Allied convoys, and without the supplies coming from North America, England might not have withstood Germany's onslaught. Eventually, escort carriers and long-range patrol aircraft introduced effective countermeasures, and most of the German U-boat ordered to the North Atlantic never returned.

After several attempts with other designs, Ford, Roush Racing, and Penske South developed a racer from the Taurus. NASCAR's approval of a four-door was needed before redesigning the body shell and chassis to compete with the "two-door" Chevy Monte Carlo and Pontiac Grand Prix.
